Diabetes Talk Show - DIABETIC PATIENT CURBING WITH BLOOD SUGAR SPIKES

If you have diabetes you know it’s a must to keep your blood sugar levels under control. But do you know what makes them spike?
What’s a spike?
After-meal, or “postprandial,” spikes are actually temporary high blood glucose levels that occur soon after eating. It is normal for the level of glucose in the blood to increase a small amount after eating, even in people who do not have diabetes. However, if the rise is too high, it can affect your quality of life today & contribute to serious health problems.
Causes of spikes
The reason blood glucose tends to spike after eating in many people with diabetes is a simple matter of timing. As amylin is either produced in insufficient amounts or not at all, so the movement of food from the stomach to the intestines is not slowed the way it should be.
As a result, food digests even faster than usual. This combination of slower insulin & faster food can cause the blood glucose level to rise quite high soon after eating. Once the mealtime insulin finally kicks in, the high is followed by a sharp drop.
Spikes can be problematic
Even though after-meal blood glucose spikes are temporary, several spikes a day, day after day, can raise your glycosylated hemoglobin(HbA1c) & a high HbA1c level has been shown to raise the risk of long-term diabetes complications.
Measures to avoid it
1.      Choose the right insulin (or other medicine) - The right insulin or medicine program can make or break your ability to control after-meal spikes
2.      Split your meal - The amount you eat has the effect on your blood glucose level. One way to lower your blood glucose rise after meals, therefore, is to eat less. But you don’t want to starve: instead, save a portion of your meal for a “snack” one or two hours later.
That way, you get all the food you need, but it doesn’t raise your blood glucose all at once.
3.      Get moving - Physical activity after eating can reduce post-meal spikes.
                             Time to strike!
